Unvaccinated Pets Can Put You at Risk: How?

It is hard to speak about our most beloved pets like this but it is disappointingly true that pets carry many diseases. They may get infected with diseases that are a threat to the community and can severely risk people’s lives around them if they are unvaccinated pets or pets that are put on preventatives. A pet that had interaction with the wild animal can contract the bacteria, viruses, and germs that can juxtapose the life of human beings and other animals surrounding them.

Therefore, it is important to vaccinate and treat your pet. Not just for others, but also for the pet’s own safety because pets that contract such fatal diseases have to be eventually euthanized. Just so your pet doesn’t have to go through all this, it is better that you get him vaccinated and treated for all the diseases and save his life and the life of others. Here is a list of those life-threatening diseases that unvaccinated and untreated pets can transfer to other canines and humans as well.

Rabies

Rabies is one of the most common and deadly diseases that wild animals and unvaccinated, infected pets can transfer. The virus is transferred through an infected animal’s bite and apparently tracks itself up inside the brain. When the antibodies against this virus are not present in the body, in advance, the body doesn’t have anything to fight against the virus. Thus, if the rabies symptoms develop in the body, there is no way to treat it. Hence, the life of the affected animal or person eventually ends.

Canine Distemper

Canine distemper is again a viral disease that mostly affects unvaccinated dogs. This can be transferred to other pets through contact. This disease primarily attacks the respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. And the symptoms can include vomiting, difficulty breathing, weight loss and hardening of footpads of inflicted dog. For a dog that is not vaccinated, this disease proves to be life-threatening. Even if the dog survives somehow, the disease may completely damage a dog’s nervous system, sight, and sensation of smell. Thus, a dog affected with this disease must be kept far away from other pets. Because the discharges from the affected pet’s body can infect other canines.

Lyme Disease

Lyme Disease is caused in dogs by ticks that carry Borrelia burgdorferi. This bacteria can be transmitted to other pets and even humans if the tick on your pet bites you or other pets. Lyme disease can cause several complications in pets as well as humans. Especially in humans, the symptoms may include disturbed heart rate, severe headaches, mental fogginess, and other brain disorders. In pets, however, this disease can cause fever, lameness, stiffness and swelling in joints and lethargy. Lyme disease can lead to kidney failure and death in severe cases. Thus, it is important that your pet is not left unvaccinated against Lyme disease or taken tick control preventatives like Frontline Plus regularly to avoid tick infestation.

Ringworm Infection

Ringworm is a fungal, skin infection that can cause flakiness, itchiness, and redness of the scalp, feet or groin of pets and infected humans. An infected animal can directly transfer this disease to humans by a single touch. Since it is a contagious disease, dogs and humans, infected from ringworms are put away from the contact of others to stop the spread of infection. This infection can be treated through antifungal products. But, it is better if the disease can be prevented in the first place.

Hookworms

Hookworms in dogs and cats are intestinal parasites. But they can be transferred to humans and other pets through the infective larvae present in their feces. The juvenile larva penetrates the skin and causes intense itching and lesions. Puppies that get infected with hookworms can even die due to anemia caused by these blood-sucking critters. In humans, it can cause excessive itchy patches and discomfort. Hence, worming is necessary for pets, every three months.

Other than these mentioned diseases, there are many other viral and bacterial diseases like – cat scratch disease, canine adenovirus, feline calicivirus, parainfluenza, etc that a pet can contract from other infected pets. Humans too can have life-threatening complications if their pet is not treated or left unvaccinated for the diseases. Thus, make sure all your pets are vaccinated and treated against the virus and bacterial infection. So, they don’t make living beings in their environment susceptible to such horrendous and deadly diseases.
